Join us for the second instalment of Raise The Bar, the event which brings together students, non-students and local writers of all ages, backgrounds, and lyrical styles, providing a platform for artists to perform and showcase their work.

This wonderful evening of spoken word poetry and lyrical entertainment, brought to you by the University of Bristol Poetry & Creative Writing society, consists of an open mic for budding writers to perform, as well as two monthly headliners - this month we are excited to welcome TOBY THOMPSON and BUDDY CARSON.

Toby Thompson:

It is a delight and an honour to welcome the incredible Toby Thompson to Raise the Bar! Toby is one of the country’s finest lyricists who has been performing at a high level, refining his craft and winning poetry slams (Glastonbury Slam 2011) since he was a young teenager. Since being given props by the likes of Kate Tempest and Akala he has lived up to the hype, performing his outstanding poetry across the country and in festivals, and we are BUZZING to have him as our November headliner. His dazzling rhyme schemes and breathtaking performances, seamlessly interwoven with subtle metaphors and astonishing lyrical content, will leave your mind well and truly blown! You don’t want to miss it!

Buddy Carson:

Supporting our headliner will be the superb wordsmith and wonderful gent that is Buddy Carson, a multi-talented writer and the founder of Stand Up For Lyricism. He writes and performs music in a duo with Emmy J Mac, sings and raps in his band Omar Don’t Scare and on top of all that writes amazing poetry! Buddy has gone from strength to strength as his band continue their steady rise in the Bath and Bristol area, and he recently supported Hollie McNish at the Komedia. His witty, well-constructed, forward-thinking verses draw on both personal and socially conscious themes to elicit emotional and thought provoking responses.
