SUMMARY

“And we’ll pretend that people cannot see you. And that you are free of your own history. And I am free of my history. We’ll pretend....”

In the flying underbelly of New York City, 1964. Steaming hot and summer on top. Lula stands on a subway platform, through a window she sees Clay. They exchange a smile. Lula boards the train. Clay, a naive bourgeois black man, is soon mesmerised by Lula, a brash and bold white woman. Lula and Clay talk. Lula and Clay flirt. Racial and sexual tensions rise and fall on this emotionally taut, high speed ride through the darkest tunnels of our minds and desires. Will they reach their destination in one piece?
