The Bristol Spotlights

SUMMARY

In this fragmented avant-garde tragedy, German dramatist George Büchner presents the shockingly visceral drama of a young man broken by a bourgeois society. A lowly soldier plagued by visions of the apocalypse, Franz Woyzeck's only happiness comes from his common law wife Marie, who has caught the eye of the brutish Drum Major. He earns extra money for his family by performing menial jobs for the Captain and agreeing to take part in medical experiments conducted by a mad Doctor. With his jealous suspicions growing, and his mental health deteriorating, the play comes to a tumultuous climax. A visual jigsaw, the play explodes from one scene to the next. A University of Bristol's Spotlights production, "Woyzeck" takes the audience into a world that is disturbingly atmospheric, darkly comic and breathtakingly poignant... We hope you like peas.
