Dirty Protest

SUMMARY

Acclaimed Welsh theatre company Dirty Protest are pleased to bring Last Christmas to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe – an important contemporary story, presented in a boldly theatrical style with a very Welsh context.

The play follows Tom, played by Sion Pritchard (Blink, Muscle), as he is confronted by the ghosts of his past when he returns home for Christmas. Forced to face his demons, he attempts to rescue his family and his future. Will Tom be able to save it all in time?

Writer Matthew Bulgo, one of the lead artists behind Dirty Protest, says, ‘Tim Price [of Dirty Protest] bullied me into writing this play and I'm very glad that he did. He's had an unerring faith in me as a playwright and in the play itself. I'd been terrified about putting pen to paper with this particular play. I'd been putting it off for months, actually more like a couple of years. It's about a man returning to his home city, and the demons he has to face – I won't say too much because I don't want to spoil it – but there was a lot of stuff in there that felt a little close to home.’

Last Christmas is directed by Clwyd Theatr Cymru\’s Associate Director, Kate Wasserberg and places the greatest Christmas taboo in the context of an imagined version of family life during the festive period.

Such spellbinding intimacy that it’s impossible not to be drawn in… (The Big Issue (Cymru)).

There are few people making theatre this exciting in Wales today (The Guardian).
